Really! In the 70’s … Really! In the 70’s I had a dentist who would drill without freezing and when I asked why he stared blankly at me and said after a long pause, “Because you can take it.” Twenty years later I found out he was much like our dentist friend in Marathon Man – a former nazi dentist. At that time there was a class action suit against him for pulling all kinds of weird shit.

Meanwhile, a professional spy/assasin called “Scila” is hot on Szell’s trail. Babe’s (Dustin Hoffman) brother, “Doc” comes to visit, and it tranpires that “Doc” and “Scila” are the same person, although Doc has no idea of his brother’s true profession. Doc, Babe, and (contd)
OK,so it’s a little … OK,so it’s a little complicated, but basically Szell is a Nazi war criminal,in exile in Paraguay. The old guy who’s killed in the car accident at the beginning of the film was Szell’s brother,so Szell is forced to come out of hiding to claim his diamonds which he stored in a depositery at a NY bank. He was known as the “Weiss Angel” (White Angel) because of his thick head of white hair, so in a effort to disguise himself, he shaves his head before arriving in New York, but some of his (contd)
Last time I went to … Last time I went to the dentist, it was a female, and as soon as I was in the chair, she whipped the drill out, so I said “Whoa, whoa, aren’t you going to anaethathise me first?” and she said “Well, the nerve’s dead, so you won’t feel anything, but we can anaethatise you if you prefer” and I said “Well, yes, I WOULD prefer if you’re going to stick a drill in my mouth!” I mean, Jeez!
If Dr. Szell wanted … If Dr. Szell wanted to save some time, he should have just made Dustin watch Ishtar!
“Is it safe?”
“I don’t know what you mean? AAHHHGHHH!”
“Perhaps you would care to watch in Hi-Def???”

Yes, it’s safe!”

He may have been sadistic, but at least he practiced good hygiene! (Always wash hands before excruciating torture! It’s just good manners!)

Nooo no no no, that … Nooo no no no, that incident has been distorted. What happened was, Hoffman had been out partying late nights to take his mind off his divorce, and Olivier basically told him to enjoy acting instead. The “try acting” version was maliciously spread around by the writer of the original novel because Hoffman wanted to have a different ending to the film than in the book and the change was done in Hoffman’s favor.
once I asked the … once I asked the dentist that too and he just laughed a little and said open. The novacaine hadn’t taken full effect from the drill and I said ok, I’ll talk! I hate the dentist too.
I remember my dad … I remember my dad telling me a story about how his dentist asked him “Is it safe?” when starting work on a cavity once. I always wondered why he hates the dentist so much, but I now know.
